Intercultural Musicology, Volume 4 Number 1

It’s great! I am glad you decided to make an online version of IM. Since I live in Timbucktu, it takes me a while to receive the bulletin. This way, I can view it as soon as it’s ready. Kudos to CIMA (by Scorpeo, posted Jul 21, 2002).

I think the webmaster has done a great job in getting this online version operational. As editor, it is my intention to make Intercultural Musicology useful for teachers in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions and in communal contexts. Obviously, there will be a need to target particular constituencies. However, I hope that my paper will serve to encourage debates as well as suggestions as to how we can confidently deal with the issue of cultural diversity – intercultural musicology – in our work (by R. Kwami, posted Aug 29 2002).

Conferences

(1) 8th CIMA Conference

Following the discussions on the 8th CIMA conference and at the CIMA Management Council meeting in June, and follow-up work by the CIMA Director, it has been decided that the next CIMA Conference be held at the University of London Institute of Education. The likely dates, to be confirmed are Monday 29th March to Wednesday 31st March 2004. Watch this space for the (confirmed) theme of the Conference!

(2) 9th CIMA Conference

It is intended to hold the 9th CIMA Symposium and Festival at the University of Pretoria in March 2006. Suggestions are welcome on the theme and sub-themes for the conference (by R. Kwami, posted Jul 20, 2002).

It is intended that the 9th CIMA conference be held at the University of Pretoria in late March 2006 (by R. Kwami, posted Sep 1 2002).

Intercultural Musicology and Ethnomusicology

(1) It would appear that the concept of Intercultural Musicology is not widely accepted and that Ethnomusicology is the umbrella term under which Intercultural Musicology and Intercultural Music(s) Education would be classified. Is this a problem, and if so, what can we do to tackle it?

(2) Also, it has been pointed out to me that perhaps, the focus on ‘cultural’ underplays the ‘social’ aspects of what we should be dealing with. What are your views on this?

(Comments welcomed via email – robert.kwami@postino.up.ac.za and the forum – http://www.music-research-inst.org/forum/.)
